Practice Insight: Week 4

With only one week until the opening fixtures of the Highland Academy Community League the five league teams,  along with the Black Isle Stags, participated in one final combined practice.

The weather was sunny but cold and the 41 players who turned up showed a vast improvement from the opening weeks.

Before the players trained in there separate teams, Wildcats head coach Robbie Paulin had a talk with the players on specific rules including sportsmanship. During the session the teams trained by themselves with their respective coaches to work on tactical elements as well as specific skills that their head coaches felt needed work.

The training was at a fast but controlled pace to get the players prepared for the first round of fixtures next weekend.

Mark PyperThere was a great effort shown by all the players and it was harder than ever to pick a player of the session. That being said, there were three players who deserve a mention. Firstly, Aidan Kent and Alex Murray from the Charleston Academy Knights, who started late with the team but are looking like welcome additions to the squad.

Speaking about his squad, Knights coach, Liam MacKenzie said, “I’m impressed with how much the team has come on these last few weeks. Every one of our players has stepped up and improved extremely quickly since our first practice. The offence showed some great play making ability with passes and the run game and our defence has improved well over the last few weeks. Corin Robinson at DB played extremely well during our defensive period making some great tackles and ability in run pursuit at DB. Our two new players to join the team late have impressed as well and should be able to slot in to our game plans nicely.”

The third player that caught my attention this week was Inverness High School Predators and 2013 Highland Wildcats Youth player Stephen McMeechan. He showed a strong performance and work effort throughout the day charging through anyone who tried to stop him.

The fixtures for next week are as follows (Saturday, 8th February at Bught Park)

Millburn Academy Eagles vs Culloden Academy Raptors
