With the University of Stirling winning their semi final play off game against Imperial College London, Scotland again has a team in the UK National Championship. And yet again Wildcat players feature prominently with senior Kenny Mackay and sophomore Craig Findlay both starting for the Scottish Champions all season.
Kenny rounds off an illustrious playing career at Stirling, which following his move to University from the Wildcats, included representing FBU Team Europe in America, with a deserved appearance at F back on the Clansmen’s record breaking high octane offence.
Craig in only his second year has also cemented himself a starting spot in a defence that gave up just one touchdown all season, although sadly he will miss the final due to injury.
Head Coach Rob Orr said of the pair, “Kenny and Craig play with a toughness and integrity to the sport that we have come to expect from Wildcat players.”
“Both are a credit to the Highland Wildcats programme that trained them throughout their youth and junior football years and we are extremely fortunate and grateful to have them with us here at The University of Stirling.”
Kenny Mackay commented, “The season went really well, we knew that the opposition that we would face in the regular season would pose very little competition for us, although we knew that the play offs would be completely different and more competitive. We took the playoffs one game at a time knowing how good a team we could be if we just executed our assignments. Really big shout out to the coaching staff who have definitely put in so much work behind the scenes to prepare us each week. Now its just one game left and it will be against the Birmingham lions – who knocked us out of the playoffs last year – the reigning UK champions.
“That game last year was a game many considered to be the final and it will be a good opportunity for us to get some revenge.”
Stirling face the Birmingham Lions in the Final of the BUCS University League on Saturday the 29th of March at John Charles Stadium in Leeds.
Mackay finished by saying, “Craig and myself never forget our roots and we do have a wildcat bond when playing on the field together.”
