The Highland Wildcats started off their 2014 campaign with a 41-0 victory at the Moray Tournament in their opening game in the BAFANL Scottish Conference. The Inverness based team opened the scoring on the first drive of the game when on third down Alasdair Howie ran 32 yards for a touchdown for the defending Scottish Champions. This touchdown was quickly converted by Seumas Ross who rushed 12 yards into the endzone for a two point conversion.

On the next drive the Pirates were stopped on fourth down due to an incomplete pass caused by Haris Ryalls which gave the Wildcats back possession of the ball. Running Back Seumas Ross then rushed 53 yards to set up the offense in the No run zone. Quarterback Euan Crawford then threw the ball in towards Mark Pyper for a Wildcats touchdown. Unfortunately for the Wildcats the ball 2 point conversion attempt was unsuccessful which left the score at 14-0.

It didn’t take long at all for the Wildcats to score as they did so on the very next play when Nose Tackle Stephen McMeechan charged into the unsuspecting Pirates Quarterback in the endzone which resulted in a safety. The score was now 16-0.

Pyper then set up another touchdown when he rushed 45 yards into the Pirates half of the field just 3 yards shy of the no run zone. On the next down he rushed 8 yards into the endzone for the score. The 2 point conversion attempt was unsuccessful leaving the Wildcats 22-0 ahead.

The Wildcats defense stopped the Pirates offense in the next set of downs and with very little time remaining in the half Seumas Ross rushed the whole length of the field for his first touchdown of the day. The 1 point conversion attempt was unfortunately unsuccessful but it meant the Wildcats were now 28-0 ahead. On the next set of downs the Pirates took a knee which meant the score heading into half time was 28-0 to the Wildcats.

The pirates started with the ball in the second period and didn’t make any significant gain in the drive which led to a turnover on downs. On the next series Seumas Ross rushed 43 yards into the opposition half, shy of the no run zone. Rookie, Kyle Holleyoake then stepped into the position of running back the next play and gained 9 yards and entered the Wildcats into the no run zone. Whilst in the no run zone rookie Quarterback Cameron Robertson threw the ball 2 yards to first-time wide receiver Thomas MacKenzie for a touchdown. Seumas Ross then received a pass from Robertson which put the score at 35-0 to the Wildcats.

The match then tightened up during the next three drives with both defences stopping the other from scoring. In these three drives Mark Pyper came close to scoring after a 35 yard rush which unfortunately didn’t lead to another score during the three drives.

Fortunately for the Wildcats after this three drive period Holleyoake stepped up his game and rushed gaining 8, then 32 and then 7 yards to set himself up for a rushing touchdown for the Wildcats. Even though the conversion attempt was unsuccessful the score was now 41-0 and the Pirates played one more play before the full time whistle went.

Mark Pyper was announced MVP at the end of the game due to the impact he had playing both Running Back and Receiving roles. He averaged 23.75 rushing yards a play when he played running back and scored 2 touchdowns (1 rushing touchdown and 1 receiving Touchdown).

Another player who has to be mentioned is Wildcats rookie Linebacker Fergus Mackenzie who had a fantastic match. He managed to complete 3 tackles and assist in a further 6 and batted the ball down on one occasion.

If the Wildcats can keep this up through out the season there is no reason why they can’t defend their Scottish Youth Championship and maybe even challenge for the UK title.
