The Highland Wildcats went into their opening home game of the season after an unprecedented 3 out of 3 victories away, including a 26-20 victory over last years champions (Lanarkshire Longhorns). Edinburgh on the other hand went in to the game with just 1 win in 2 and their chances of qualifying for the championship game in the balance.
The first quarter was a tightly contested affair with only two touchdowns in it and both of them were scored by the Wildcats. The first was a 13 yard touchdown pass from Euan Crawford to tight end Erem Demirel. This sadly was unconverted. The second of the 1st Quarter touchdowns was scored on defense by Demirel again. This left the score at the end of the quarter at 12-0.
The Invernessian’s continued their dominance of the first half with two more touchdowns. The first of them was scored when running back Declan Maclennan rushed in for a 59 yard touchdown (which is the second longest rushing touchdown of the season so far). This touchdown was converted by fellow running back Seumas Ross to leave the score at 20-0 to the hosts. The last touchdown of the half was scored towards the end of the half after a long drive which resulted in Seumas Ross running in from 1 yard out giving him his 5th touchdown of the season. This left the score at 26-0 at half tie to the Highlanders.
Unlike in the Longhorns game the Wildcats did not concede any touchdowns in the 3rd quarter and increased the comfort-ability of their lead. The first Wildcats touchdown of the quarter was scored by Seumas Ross who rushed in for another 1 yard touchdown. This was then converted by Quarterback Euan Crawford who rushed 3 yards for the extra points. The final touchdown of the quarter was scored by rookie running back Paul Noble who rushed it in for a 14 yard rushing touchdown. This was then converted by Euan Crawford who threw in a three yard pass to rookie receiver Ryan Lee-Topp to leave the score at 42-0 to the league leaders.
The final quarter started off in the same way as all the other quarters with a Wildcats touchdown. This was scored by Paul Noble who rushed past the Wolves defense for a 22 yard touchdown. This was unconverted but at this point of the game it didn’t really matter. The Wolves didn’t leave the Highland capital scoreless though as they managed to get a touchdown of their own after a huge play from their special teams unit. After this minor set back the Wildcats scored their final touchdown of the game. The scorer of the touchdown was Alasdair Howie who rushed in for a 3 yard touchdown and this was subsequently converted by Crawford who found Ewan Sime for a 3 yard extra points pass. The final whistle then and the Wildcats won 56-6.
The defensive unit was strong throughout the game and there were several standout defensive performances throughout and here is a couple of them. Mark Pyper was domineering on defense all day and recorded a staggering 13 tackles in total (1 solo and 12 assisted) as well as an interception. He was right in the heart of the action. Another performance to be mentioned has to be Haris Ryalls who recorded 12 tackles and an interception.
